It started all in 1995 when Elena Folomyeva of Russia attended her first patchwork course. The beauty and the many possibilities patchwork offered got her hooked immediately.
Since then, she went all the way from being a beginner and an amateur quilter until she finally became the leader of the training center of the “World of Sewing” retail chain. Today she is teaching at Marina Kontsevaya’s patchwork and quilting school in St. Petersburg (Russia) and is busy publishing her website (http://folomyova.narod.ru) and her blog (http://folomeva.blogspot.ru) where she shares pictures, ideas, techniques, reviews on books and exhibitions and even does step-by-step.workshops.
“I never stop learning” she says. “When looking at photographs of quilts or attending quilt shows I surely find a design or a technique I don’t know. I love trying out things that are new to me – materials, techniques or patchwork blocks and to combine these new things with something that is already familiar, to obtain interesting results.”
The main source of inspiration for Elena Folomyeva is the world around her – nature in all its aspects. “There is so much beauty around us” Elena states. “And it is up to us to notice it, to incorporate it in our work and to convey it to the viewers of our art.”
So its only logical that she loves those quilts the most that speak to the viewer, quilts that give a statement. “I love quilts that you con contemplate for a long time, discovering some new and interesting details everytime you look at them.”
In the almost 20 years she is quilting Elena Folomyeva has been participant and awardee at many Russian and international exhibitions, among them such prestigious ones as the “St. Petersburg Art Week” (Russia), the “Carrefour Européen du Patchwork” in France and the “Festival of Quilts” in Birmingham (England).
I am sure that we will hear and see a lot more of Elena Folomyeva and her quilts in the future and I am looking forward to it.
