It’s one of the most prestigious shows in textile art: Quilt National. And the call for entries for 2017 is out now. Here are the details:
Quilt National 2017
is an international juried exhibition of innovative contemporary art quilts and will take place in the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio. USA, from May 27 to September 4, 2017.
It is the twentieth in the series of international juried competitions dedicated to promoting the contemporary quilt by serving as a showcase for new work that provides the viewer with an appreciation of the variety of techniques and innovative trends in the medium of layered and stitched fabric.
The jurors will select works that represent unique approaches to the medium and demonstrate the breadth and diversity of contemporary expressions. Visitors to Quilt national will see that the time honored traditions are thriving and are being expressed in new forms as today’s artists rise to meet the challenges of new techniques and materials.
Work will be judged on originality, technique and craftsmanship. All work must be the result of independent effort. The work must be an original design, not a copy or a variation of the original design of another artist working in any medium.
The jurors are Nancy Crow, Petra Fallaux and Art Martin.
All entries must be new work – completed after September 1, 2015. The recent modification of an older or previously dated work does not make the work eligible unless the artist can document significant differences between the original and revised version of the piece.
The work must possess the basic structural characterstics of a quilt. It must be predominantely fabric or fabric-like material and must be composed of at least 2 full and distinct layers – a face and a backing layer.
The face layer may be pieced, appliquéd, whole cloth, stitched or fused to a foundation or a combination of these techniques. The 2 layers must be held together by hand- or machine quilting or other elements that pierce all layers and are distributed throughout the surface. At lease some of these stitches or elements should be visible on the back.
The entry fee of 55.00 US$ is for up to 3 quilts.
The submitted work may not be shown in an international or American fiber arts exhibition and/or in an American publication that has national or international distribution (including SAQA publications).
The vertical or the horizontal dimensions of any single piece or group of pieces must not exceed 100 inches or 254 centimeters.
